Governance and Fiscal Policy Systems in Kenya
The broad objective of this project was to promote informed dialogue and convergence of views on the key issues surrounding economic management in Kenya, starting with formulation and administration of fiscal policy systems. The specific objective of the project was to critically examine formulation, management, and implementation of fiscal policies with a view to identifying areas of governance loopholes and ways of addressing these. The project also assessed how the process has impacted on matters of economic governance, performance of the economy, and welfare of Kenyans.

Governance Project to Inform the Current Debate on Kenya’s Democratic Transition
The broad objective of this project was to promote informed dialogue and convergence of views on the key governance issues touching on Kenya’s political transition to ensure sustained social and economic stability in years to come. The specific objectives of the project were to: (1) Identify and prioritise the key governance issues that must be tackled for Kenya to get into a path of sustained economic growth and social stability; (2) Conduct objective research and analysis of the four top-most priority issues identified with a view to establishing areas of common concern to Kenyans and ways through which an amicable process of tackling them can be reached;

UNECA Africa Governance Project: The Kenya Case
The overall objective of this research project was to monitor the progress of good governance in Kenya as part of an Africa-wide project using ECA-developed research instruments. The specific objectives of the project were to: (1) Define good governance in a comprehensive manner; (2) Conceptualise and operationalise indicators to measure good governance; (3) Device and fine-tune the research methodology and instruments that will serve as the mechanism for monitoring and assessing progress towards good governance.

Study on the Economic and Political Developments in Kenya
This broad objective of this project was to provide ad hoc and independent economic advise to the management of Barclays Bank of Kenya and the Embassy of Japan in Kenya on economic, social and political developments.

Kenya Financial Sector Reform Forum (April 15-17 2004)
The objectives of the forum were to: (i) provide an opportunity for stakeholders to meet in an informal atmosphere, devoid of business considerations, in order to demystify finance and build bridges among stakeholders; (ii) provide an opportunity for financial sector stakeholders to discuss key issues affecting the delivery of financial services in the country; (iii) offer a platform for disseminating and discussing the findings and key recommendations of recent analytical work on the sector; (iv) build a broad-based consensus among the stakeholders on the key findings of the analytical studies in order to form a basis for designing and implementing financial sector reforms; and (v) isolate key findings from the analytical studies on which stakeholders may not be agreed and which may require further work. Overall, the Forum was expected to address how to improve access of financial services for the majority of Kenyans.

First Stakeholders’ Workshop for the Kenya Development Gateway Project (April 06 2004)
The main purpose of the Workshop was to introduce the Kenya Development Gateway (KDG) project and the Gateways concept to the stakeholders, including government, public and private sector organisations, NGOs, civil society organisations, and micro and small enterprises.

The Status of Regional Trade Liberalization in East Africa
The broad objective of this project was to take stock of recent trends and current status of regional trade liberalisation in East Africa. Specifically, the project explored the recent and current trade regimes in each of the three EAC countries as well as the direction of intra-regional trade, the evolution of general tariffs and tariff structures, revenue implications of tariff reforms, and EAC negotiations on formation of a customs union. It discussed technical, political and strategic issues that may constitute stumbling blocks in the achievement of regional integration in East Africa.

Information and Communication Technologies and the Productivity of MSEs in Africa
This collaborative project, co-sponsored by ACEG and the Institute for New Technologes at the United Nations University (UNU/INTECH), sought to identify mechanisms through which MSEs in Africa can utilize Information and Communication Technologies to increase their productivity and overall contribution to growth and development in the continent.
