PROGRAM AGENDA

Accountable Governance

Good governance implies the use of political power to manage cleavages and conflict within society, facilitate nation building, promote and nurture democratic processes, enhance the effectiveness of public institutions and efficiency of public administration through coherent decision-making processes. Such governance together with more transparent, predictable and effective regulatory frameworks helps to elicit and maintain confidence, trust and support; reinforce the legitimacy of government; and, nurture trust between public officials and the people. This creates an environment where public and private investment decisions are made in the most economical and socially efficient manner. Under this theme, ACEG considers the following issues as important for policy research:

i. The rights and interests of minority groups

ii. Affirmative action in the context of good governance

iii. Role of unfettered mass media

iv. Link between corruption and poverty

v. The rule of law

vi. Access to justice, public safety and security

vii. Devolvement of power and resources

viii. Conflict resolution

ix. Public service delivery

;x. Anti-corruption policies and action programs
